Understanding your door

What people ask us

Repair & Maintenance
Is the inspection different for an older detached garage with springs along the tracks?
The route is the same and the counterbalance looks different. Extension springs stretch beside the horizontal tracks and pull through pulleys, so the technician examines each spring for stretch and a broken end, each pulley for a grooved wheel or a seized bearing, the cable clips, and whether a containment cable runs through the centre of each spring. Balance, reversal and photo-eye tests are unchanged. Garage Door Safety Inspection
What should I do if the bottom seal freezes to the floor?
Do not keep pressing the button; the opener can tear the seal or pull the top section out of shape. Free the seal by clearing the ice along the threshold, with warm water poured on the concrete rather than the door, or by working a plastic scraper along the seal. Then treat the seal with a silicone spray. Keeping snow and meltwater cleared from the threshold and keeping the seal flexible with silicone prevents most repeats. Garage Door Tune-Up
How often should the door be checked after this?
A monthly look of your own at rollers, cables, hinges and the reversal test keeps small problems small, and a professional tune-up once a year covers the parts you cannot safely handle: spring tension, cable condition, track alignment and opener settings. A door that has come off its track once is worth this attention, because the event often reveals wear that has been building for a while. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What happens if my door's design has been discontinued?
It happens with older doors, since embossing patterns, joint profiles and colours change over the years. The technician looks for the nearest current section from the same manufacturer and describes how it would differ in look and fit. Sometimes the difference is minor and acceptable; sometimes the joint no longer mates. In that case the options are a section from a compatible series, or replacing the door as a whole, and both are explained before anything is ordered. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
What is the difference between nylon and steel rollers?
Both are a wheel on a steel stem, commonly on ball bearings though standard nylon rollers can be bearingless; the bigger difference is the wheel material. A steel wheel is tough and suits very heavy or commercial doors, but steel on a steel track is loud and grows louder as bearings wear. A nylon wheel wraps a tire around the hub, absorbing vibration rather than passing it into the track, so the door runs more quietly and the wheel never rusts. For most residential doors, nylon is the usual recommendation. Garage Door Roller Replacement
What are the hinges made of?
Stamped galvanized steel, formed into two leaves joined by a pin or a rolled tube. The zinc coating is what resists rust in a garage that sees wet cars and salt, and it is why a scratched or bent hinge starts to brown at the damaged spot. Edge hinges include a tube that holds the roller stem. Thickness is given as a gauge, most residential hinges being 14 or 18. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Should the track be lubricated?
It depends on the door, and manufacturers disagree, which surprises many people. Some want the track kept clean and dry, since lubricant there can collect grit and let the wheels skid instead of roll, wearing the roller and the track edge; others specify lubricant at the track bend. The moving parts, roller bearings, hinge pins and springs, get their own lubricant either way, in the type the manual specifies, with a few cycles of the door to spread it. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Does the new cable have to match the old one exactly?
It has to match the door, which may not be the same thing if the old cable was wrong. Length is set by the door height, the drum profile and the lift type; diameter and construction by the door's weight. A cable that is a little long overlaps on the drum and wears; one that is short leaves the door out of level. The technician measures the door and the drum rather than trusting the old cable. Openers & Access
My opener has no photo eyes. Can it be kept in service?
Openers without an external sensor date from before 1993, when photo eyes or an equivalent device became part of the operator standard. The door industry's own inspection checklist and consumer safety regulators both recommend replacing such units rather than repairing them, because the contact-reversal feature alone is a weaker protection for anyone or anything under the door. A diagnosis on one of these units usually ends with a replacement recommendation, explained plainly. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
My opener is decades old. Can the chain drive still be repaired?
Often, yes. Gear kits, sprockets, chains and trolleys are still made for many older heads, and tension, phase and limits can be set on almost any unit. The limit is parts: some makers no longer support units made before the mid-1990s, and those also lack the photo-eye protection expected today. The technician checks parts availability for your model and lays out repair beside renewal so you can decide with the facts. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
I pulled the red cord during a power cut. Could that have caused this?
It can, if the door was open or out of balance when it was released. The release itself disconnects the trolley from the belt, so a falling door does not throw its weight onto the drive; the real risk is the door itself crashing down and damaging the tracks, hinges or panels. Nothing about the cord itself is harmful; it is designed to be used. The habit to keep is to release the door only when it is closed. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Is battery backup worth having?
For many households it is the feature they value most, especially where ice storms and winter outages are part of life. A backup battery inside or beside the head unit runs the door for a number of cycles when the power is off, so you can get the car out or put it away without heaving the door up by hand in the dark. The head unit chirps or lights an indicator when the battery needs renewing, which is every few years. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Can I add windows without losing privacy?
Yes. Window location, glass treatment and viewing height can be selected together. Frosted, textured or obscured glazing admits daylight while limiting direct views, subject to the available options for the chosen door. Glazing also changes weight and thermal performance, so it belongs in the original order and counterbalance specification. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Can I keep the garage door opener I already have?
Possibly, after its identity, condition and compatibility are checked against the new door. The installer reviews door height and weight, track layout, reinforcement, attachment geometry, travel limits, controls and safety sensors. The door is balanced and operated manually before any opener is connected. If the existing unit fits the documented requirements, it can be integrated and tested as part of the installation scope. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
How do insulation and weather seals fit into the project?
Insulated section construction can add stiffness, comfort, and weight, while perimeter seals limit drafts and ordinary moisture entry around the closed door. These choices are coordinated with the wind-rated configuration rather than selected separately. Bottom seal contact, side weatherstrip, and top seal alignment are checked during handover so the reinforced assembly also closes neatly for daily use. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
What measurements are needed before ordering the door?
The survey records clear opening width and height, side room, headroom and backroom, often at more than one point. It also checks floor level, jamb and header condition, ceiling obstacles, track supports and opener position. These measurements determine door size and hardware layout. Exterior trim and the desired panel proportions are documented so technical fit and visual fit agree. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
