Garage Door Panel Replacement
The inside face of one section has started to bow outward and the outer skin has a soft, wavy look. Tap it and it sounds hollow in places.
Garage Door Panel Replacement
In plain words
Trade guidance treats a garage door as a system: sections, hinges, rollers, tracks, cables, springs and opener all depend on one another, and an impact on one section rarely stops there. That is why a section replacement includes checking what the damage did to everything connected to it. A bent hinge is replaced, a roller that jumped is checked for a flat spot, a track bracket that shifted is reset, and the spring balance is re-measured with the new section's weight in place. The section is the visible part of the repair; the alignment and balance work around it are what make the door run true again.
How the visit goesYou misjudged the last metre of the driveway and felt the bumper meet the door. The bottom section now carries a crease across most of its width. The door still opens, but it shudders as that section reaches the curve in the track.

How the visit goes
Is a matching section still made?
Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.
Fitting the new section into the door
The new section is lifted into the gap, its rollers guided into the tracks and its joint mated to the section below so the two profiles nest. Hinges go on according to the number stamped on them: each position in the door uses a different hinge offset, which places the roller progressively further from the door face so the upper sections follow the curve of the track. New self-tapping screws are driven into the stiles at the factory hole positions, a strut is bolted across if the section calls for one, and the technician confirms the section sits flat and the joint above closes tight.
A door that runs as one piece again
When the work is finished the new section is indistinguishable in the way the door moves. The joints close tight with no daylight, the door rises without the shudder or catch that gave the damage away, and it sits level on the floor with the seal compressed evenly across its width. The technician walks you through the cycle with the opener and by hand so you can see the balance for yourself, points out the hinges and rollers that were replaced, and leaves the old section for disposal or takes it away as you prefer. Any temporary bracing from the first visit is gone.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Construction and insulation
An uninsulated steel section, a polystyrene-cored section and a polyurethane-injected section with a steel backer are different products, and the replacement has to match the construction the door already has, which sets the part's line on the quote.
2A make-safe visit while the section is on order
When the door has to be braced, disconnected or secured closed until the section arrives, that first visit is quoted as its own item, with the installation visit following once the part is in.
3Spring work required
A bottom section means torsion springs are unwound and rewound, or, on an extension-spring door, the door is raised and secured so the springs relax and its hooks and cables are reset instead. A section changing the door's weight may call for a balance adjustment.
Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions
What happens if my door's design has been discontinued?
It happens with older doors, since embossing patterns, joint profiles and colours change over the years. The technician looks for the nearest current section from the same manufacturer and describes how it would differ in look and fit. Sometimes the difference is minor and acceptable; sometimes the joint no longer mates. In that case the options are a section from a compatible series, or replacing the door as a whole, and both are explained before anything is ordered.
Does a new section bring back the door's original strength?
A section ordered to the same specification carries the same steel gauge, core and reinforcement as the original, and it is fitted with sound hinges, new fasteners and, where the design calls for it, a strut. Combined with the alignment and balance work done at the same time, the door returns to operating the way its manufacturer designed it to. Where an original section had bowed for want of a strut, adding one leaves that part stiffer than before.
Why is the bottom section handled differently from the others?
The bottom section is where the lift cables attach, through the bottom brackets at each end, and those cables are under the full pull of the springs. Before the brackets come off, the springs have to be unwound or unhooked so the cables go slack. The bottom section also carries the seal retainer and astragal that meet the floor. After the new section is in, the springs are re-tensioned and the balance reset.
